Moxibustion for Breech Babies

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese therapy used to encourage a breech baby to turn into a head-down position that is used in addition to needling.

It involves gently warming a specific acupuncture point on the little toes

using a lit moxa stick (made from dried mugwort). The warmth stimulates

the point and can increase the baby’s activity, which may help them turn

naturally.  In clinic, Ashling usually combines moxibustion with:

  • Osteopathy

  • Cranial osteopathy

  • Gentle exercises

  • Postural advice

  • Medical acupuncture

These approaches help optimise the position of the pelvis and spine, giving the baby more room to move and settle comfortably into a head-down position.

Importantly, the baby is not physically turned by Ashling.  There is no pushing involved!

The Acupuncture Point Used

The point used for breech presentation is called Zhi Yin (Urinary Bladder 67 / UB67).

It is located on the outer corner of the little toe near the nail.

What Is a Moxa Stick?

Moxa sticks look a little like cigars and are made from compressed dried mugwort wrapped in paper.

When lit, they glow slowly and produce gentle heat which is directed towards the acupuncture point.

How to Use a Moxa Stick at Home

Ideally ask someone to help you.

  1. Light the moxa stick
Use a match or lighter. The tip should glow gently, similar to a cigar.

  2. Locate the point
UB67 is on the outer corner of the little toe.

  3. Hold the moxa near the skin
Hold the glowing end about ½ cm away from the point so that it feels warm but not hot.

  4. Alternate between feet
Warm each point for 15–30 seconds, then switch to the other foot.

  5. Continue for around 15 minutes
Treatment is usually done twice daily for 5–14 days, depending on advice from your practitioner.

Extinguishing the Moxa Stick

To safely put the moxa stick out and allow it to be used again later:

  • Place the glowing end into a glass jar with some rice or sand at the bottom

  • Press down until it stops glowing

Important Advice

  • Always speak with your midwife before starting moxibustion.

  • Do not allow the stick to touch the skin.

  • Stop if the heat becomes uncomfortable.

A Note of Reassurance

Many babies turn on their own as pregnancy progresses. Moxibustion is simply a gentle method sometimes used to encourage natural movement, particularly between 34 and 36 weeks of pregnancy.
